Depending on your budget and taste, there is a wide variety of accommodations from family run apartments, to sprawling beach resorts. Find your ideal accommodation. Once you arrive at your hotel, before throwing open those suitcases, make sure you like your room. If not, just ask for a change.

Unless choc-a-bloc, most hotels will try to make sure you're really happy in your temporary home. So now the fun starts. Here are some suggestions some people don't get past the first one on this list, but being your first time try to do some of the other stuff too! You're inevitably going to be hypnotized and drawn to the white sand and blue clear water. Don't resist it. Aruba has beaches of all shapes and sizes.

Oh and remember that sunscreen! Aruba's sun is powerful, even if it is overcast you will get red without sunscreen. Aruba's sunsets are spectacular.

If you want to get out and about on your own, rent a 4x4 and it will get you pretty much anywhere.

The Dutch continued to administer the island into the 20th century, with only a brief break during the Napoleonic Wars, when the British took control of the island. During the 19th century, gold was discovered, and the island became prosperous. This prosperity was bolstered in the early part of the 20th century, when oil infrastructure came to the island.

Unlike most of the Caribbean, Aruba never played a large role in the slave trade or plantation economies. Since Aruba receives very little rainfall, there was no incentive to grow sugar cane or other island crops, which lowered the incentive to make Aruba a major stop in the slave trade. As a result, the demographics of Aruba are predominantly Spanish and Dutch, with influence from the indigenous Arawak peoples.

In the Netherlands Antilles — which included Aruba — and Surinam became part of the newly reconstituted Kingdom of the Netherlands, along with the actual state of the Netherlands in Northern Europe, as autonomous regions with voting powers in regards to matters that affected the entire Kingdom.
